Free Store

Morwell Free Store #waronwaste

The Morwell Free Store is our very own grassroots effort to redirect items from landfill to people who need them. It has been hosted and supported and operates out of the Morwell Neighbourhood House since 2014. People asked us “what happens if you run out of stuff to give away” and in 5 years that hasn’t happened once. It’s all powered by volunteers and supported by the community and it has sparked other projects such as Repair Cafe Latrobe Valley Morwell Free Store to name a few.

The free store is run on people power. Come along and shop, take whatever you need.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here we have a few frequently asked questions to help you.

How do I get to Morwell Neighbourhood House via public transport?

Catch the Bus route 21 to the Beattie Cres/Vary St stop* – From Mid Valley hourly – From Commercial Road

When are the free store events on?

The Freestore runs monthly at MorwellNH. It is best to check the house facebook page for events & dates or you can call the house directly to find out when the next one is on.

Why are we doing this?

There is a lot of waste generated by society each year. By giving away free things we are slowing down the tide of things going to landfill, slowing down the destruction of the environment and trying to make people happy. It also helps those who can least afford it.

Where does all this stuff come from?

Some stuff is donated by members of the community, some we decided that someone else needed it more than ourselves right now. Some have been donated by op shops from stuff they would otherwise need to pay to dump.

Is this stuff still good?

As far as we can tell yes, but we really can’t be sure, it may need a wash, wipe down or other. We can’t guarantee anything. All our donations are second chance items. They are pre-owned and pre-loved and will have some general wear n tear.

Can you add stuff to the free store?

YES! Just make sure it’s in a condition that a reasonable person might want it. You can even come along and help we welcome any community involvement from volunteers.

The types of items accepted as donations to the Free Store include; clothing, toys, books, electrical items (working), shoes, linen, kitchenware and non-perishable food items.

Do you take furniture?

We can’t take furniture and suggest you donate it to St Luke’s Op Shop on Princes Drive or Vinnies Morwell.

Can I donate electrical Items?

For community safety reasons electrical items need to be tagged and tested so bring them early and leave them with us. They will be made available at another free store event. Call 51345488 to check if your items will be suitable for the freestore.

Returns Policy

If it doesn’t fit or you change your mind, you can bring it back for a 100% refund ($0) or Swap it at the next free store for something else.

I want to fix or mend my item?

We really do not want the item going into landfill. Come along to one of our repair cafe events & we will help you learn to fix the item. This is about sharing valuable skills & knowledge.

Our work is inspired by the Pay it Forward Model. To ensure we can service all those who need it please take what you need & where you can, do something nice for someone else or donate your unwanted items back to the free store. Kindness is contagious
